The Compart Program features four breeds: Duroc, Hampshire, Yorkshire, and Landrace. We have four nucleus-level farms generating the purelines from 1,100 sows. In addition, our multiplier system has 1,500 sows producing F1 gilts.
Comparts offer two levels of health, either conventional or SPF.Our breeding stock is raised in total confinement facilities similar to modern commercial production. All farms are monitored monthlyto meet state and federal health regulations. The Compart family has been recognized for years as the largest producer of Nationally Accredited SPF breeding stock in the United States. Quarterly slaughter inspections and herd visits are required to be part of the National SPF program.
This is a family operation where you deal with family members who are involved in the day-to-day management of the hogs. Ultimately, we are concerned about producing pork in a manner that will be profitable for the producer and result in a satisfied consumer.
For over 40 years customers have relied on Comparts for practical, sound, performance oriented breeding stock. Since its inception, the Compart Program has been built around performance testing. In fact, we were the first breeders in Minnesota to start an on-farm performance testing program, and were very involved with progeny testing at the Minnesota Swine Evaluation Station at New Ulm, MN.
As times have changed, so have methods of testing. Now we practice total herd testing, where virtually all pureline boars, gilts and barrows are tested for growth, leanness and loineye. In addition, maternal performance data is collected including number born, number weaned, and 21-day litter weights. This data is sent to the National Swine Registry and is made part of the largest database of its kind in the world.
The data is then processed and Expected Progeny Differences (EPD's) are generated. An EPD is the estimated genetic value of the animal. Once the EPD's have been calculated, comparisons to other herds can be accomplished. Multi-trait indexes, such as Terminal Sire Index (TSI), Maternal Line Index (MLI), and Sow Productivity Index (SPI), are also calculated based on the EPD's of individual pigs. This testing program known as S.T.A.G.E.S. is recognized around the world as one of the most powerful tools in making genetic progress.
Comparts is one of the largest participants in the S.T.A.G.E.S. performance testing program.
The latest Across Herd Sire Summaries in each of the four breeds show Compart genetics, either bred or owned by us, as leaders in such areas as growth rate, litter weights, TSI, MLI, and reducing backfat. We have the latest copy of the Across Herd Sire Summaries available for your inspection.
